Perky Boy

Perky boy passed away in the night on Thursday. It was sad to see him go, as he is probably one of the cooliest birds I have come across, if not the loudest. He often decided to sing really loudly just as the children were getting off to sleep (how ironic).
Some of the children came into the office and wanted to see Perky, it gave them a bit of time to talk to Jessie and Tamara about Perky dying. They asked questions to help them make sense of their world and what it means when Perky 'can't move any more'. We discussed how his body had shut down and wasn't working any more, he was quite old (10 years). We put Perky into a box with soft cushioning and put him in his little grave. Some of the older children gathered some flowers for Perky and we sung a wee song.
Death is often a hard concept for children to understand so sometimes pets can give them a little way of understanding. For some children this will be their first experience of death.
