After our trip to the fruit shop to buy bananas, we made a yummy banana cake! Max held the leading hand during this activity, because he was the main helper to choose the bananas and pay the lady the money. The next day, I had organised a recipe and gathered the ingredients for the cake. Max, Acacia, Maia, Ruby and Caelyn washed their hands and joined me at the outside table. They all took responsibility for a particular ingredient. Max took charge of mashing the banana and mixing it in. Maia wanted to crack the two eggs. We all took a turn to stir the mixture and practised our turn taking skills, patience and communication skills. This group of children were very aware of the process of cooking and following recipes. We all enjoyed eating the cake, along with the chocolate icing and sprinkles, for morning tea the next morning.

We at home are about to embark on a Bake Every Sunday Tradition. With the kids choosing something out of a recipie book and bein responsible for cleaning up as we go etc. Just have to whip up some kids sized aprons and bakers hats (for some reason the Kath and Kim Apron the reaches the floor doesnt seem appropriate lol) Whenever we bake the kids are so proud of the finished product, you can even photograph your kids doing this and using healthy choices and send them into the Healthy Food Guide and they can win a prize. Yay for kids in the kitchen!!
ps we as parents just need to get our heads around the excessive mess caused by young helpers... its all part of the fun.

Thanks for you comment Karla. Sounds like you have great fun with your kids baking at home. Its great to hear, because sometimes the thought of cooking (=mess) with children at home is daunting! Ruby loves taking responsibility for jobs and tasks at KIDSPACE and joining in on group experiences, so its so great to see the follow up at home =)
