Making afternoon tea

Seen as it was a cold day I thought it would be nice if the children make some piklets for afternoon tea. I asked who would be interested, Sarah, Charlie, Libby, Amelia, Chardanae and Eneri wanted to help they went and washed their hands then came to the table. They all had a turn and helped measure each ingredient then put it into the bowl, they were great at sharing the jobs around and being aware of everyone getting a turn. We talked about who does baking at home. Eneri said "I used to", then Charlie also said the same. Amelia said "I like piklets", I then said, "You often have them in your lunch box don't you". Great conversations were happening. They were learning about measurements, quantity, sharing, turn taking, control of fine motor skills they as they carefully pour and hold measuring cups, safety as the electric fry pan is very HOT! and contributing to the life of the centre. Most of the children stayed for a while to help, but in particular Sarah stayed and helped right to the end. We had to make a few batches 'especially because Irene could smell them from the office and hoped there would be enough for her to have one'. Sarah helped flip the piklets she was very controlled at this, it's not always an easy skill to master, she said "Papa can flip them really high at home". Once they were all cooked Sarah helped put butter, honey and Jam on them. Paige came to have a look at what we were doing at the end. She helped with passing the honey to be put away and put her finger on left over ingredients on table and eat it mmm just couldn't wait huh. Then there you have it afternoon tea warm and ready to fill those hungry tums!
