Children's own names are highly personal and are often the first words children recognise, supporting children's comprehension, motivation and decoding skills within literacy. Supporting the children's interest in writing their own names, I set up an activity involving coloured salt and letter cards. Within this activity I showed the children the first letters of their names with the cards, and then we re-created the letters in the coloured salt. Within this activity children learn alphabetic principles and knowledge, decoding of text, together with learning the spelling of their own names.
